Volunteers

We have been welcoming volunteers from all over the world since 2003.

Volunteers find us either through WWOOF or by contacting us directly. You don’t need any previous experience to come (but if you do, then great!). We look for people with enthusiasm and easy going natures for living and working side by side. Not only will you have a wonderful experience in a beautiful environment, you will also become part of the Os Figueiros family and hopefully leave with lots of new skills.

Essentially, we offer an exchange of practical work for your stay. But rather than a straight swap of food and board for labour, we really see it more as an exchanging of skills, so all of us can learn something from each other… whether it be a new recipe, way of planting, or a just a different way of looking at things.

The work involved is varied and depending on our schedule could be gardening, renovation work or helping with the hosting of courses. If you have any other skills you think we might find useful, then please let us know.

Have a look at our holidays page for more information about the local area and facilities here at Os Figueiros.

A guide but by no means an exhaustive list of reasons people join us:

  • Career breaks, gap years and sabbaticals
  • People wanting to experience an alternative way of living
  • Life changes
  • Wanting a space to reflect away from the pace of city life
  • Wanting to do practical work outside

You can volunteer here from between two weeks and six months. It’s totally free to volunteer, and as a guide we work for approx 25 hour per week with plenty of free time to relax and explore the local area. It’s important to have a flexible attitude to how the hours are divided, which can vary according to weather and the work we are doing.

If you would like to join us as a volunteer, please email us with a little bit about yourself and the dates you would like to come. We promise we’ll always get back to you, but because we are often outside getting muddy it might not be straight away.

Here’s what one of our past volunteers had to say:
I still maintain that the week we spent with you in your wonderful house and surrounding countryside was the best week of my life, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. I’ve been meaning to write to you for a long time, as I’ve been thinking about coming back to Os Figueiros since the day I left!
